What will I be doing?
There is a big demand for English teachers in private English schools in Taiwan right now. OMF in Taiwan is working to build a network of Christian English teachers who will support each other and help local churches reach out into the community through English. There is currently a team in Kaohsiung made up of people from Canada, England, New Zealand and the U.S.A. You will teach in a private language schools (making about $15 an hour), and you will study Chinese part-time and be involved in ministry

Teaching position at a Chinese elementary, middle or high school, college or university. (Mostly teach English, however, there may be the opportunity to teach other subjects depending on your academic background)
The working week is a minimum of 15-20 hours
Free time is available some afternoons and evenings, and every weekend. Overtime is always available which is paid extra

Teaching English in South Korea- The Opportunity of a Lifetime

Life is about opportunities! Don’t let this one pass you by!

Teaching English in a different country provides great opportunities to explore a new culture, travel, save money, learn a new language, and meet new people. You can go almost anywhere in Asia and find some form of job opportunity to teach English. The demand for English teachers in Asia is growing and there is no better moment to seize the chance of a lifetime. The major ESL markets in Asia include China, South East Asia, Japan, and South Korea. Each of these places has distinct cultures, languages, and opportunities. South Korea offers the best compensation packages for English teachers compared to the other Asia countries.

It is true that Japan offers some of the highest salaries for English teachers but the Japan also has one of the highest costs of living in the world (housing, food, transportation, mobile phones, internet, and medical costs). Housing is also not provided for English teachers in Japan so you would have to find residency yourself and pay out of your own salary which would make it nearly impossible for you to save a decent amount of money.

China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia also offer English teaching positions but their meager compensation packages pale in comparison to countries such as South Korea or Japan. They do not offer competitive benefit packages for teachers. These countries recognize the need for native English speaking teachers but governments have very little means of providing the opportunities for things such as, competitive salary, compensation, housing, insurance, and airfare. The average salary for English teachers is roughly $600 US dollars per month. It is true that this is sufficient money to live a comfortable life in that particular country but would only be pennies on the dollar back home, thus you would not be able to save much if anything at all. If one of the reasons you want to teach English abroad is the opportunity to save money, this would clearly not be the road to take.

Teaching English in South Korea as a public or private school teacher offers the best opportunity in all of Asia, and maybe the world. South Korea has been rapidly growing in the ESL department for the past 25 years. This means that they offer high salaries (crucial to people who are trying to save money), they have low costs but have a high standard of living compared to other Asian countries (inexpensive food, great transportation at low costs, and free housing). The greatest thing about South Korea is that they offer free housing (single apartment) for English teachers as well as 50% medical coverage. Visiting the doctor in the case you are not feeling well is very inexpensive. In addition at the end of a one year contract you not only get your last paycheck but also severance pay for an addiction paycheck and your national pension. Even if you do not save you will be going home with at least $5,000. Another great thing about living in South Korea is that it is in the heart of Asia, which makes travelling and vacationing to other Asian countries is very convenient and cheap. For people who enjoy a combination of work and play South Korea would be clear cut choice.
